Should you buy links at all?

There was a time when a lot of webmasters made lots of money by selling links on their sites that commanded high Page Rank. The thought process underlying such an activity was that a higher page rank site is a more authoritative source for content than a site that is new.

Theoritically speaking, this makes a great sense. But, the loophole in such a system was the trading of links for money. Hence, it had to invite the wrath of dear Google. So, while it ran well for some time, Google started to notice the trend of buying PR to rank higher and started penalizing sites that used such tactics for higher page rank.

I can admit that this practice is still rampant; the only change being that it is being done in hushed environment. For a business site that wants to rank high in search engines, it is important to write content that makes sense for the visitors. If your visitors like you, Google will like you. There is no short-cut to success, be it on search engines or the real life. I have seen posts of this blog getting indexed in less than an hour. And, I have not traded any link whatsoever.

As a newbie into SEO or as a wannabe business looking for search-engine-optimization or toprank in google I will advise that you should be building a good site with good and relevant content that is original in nature. Submit your site to Google and other directories manually and allow the gradual improvements in traffic to take place. You will have long-term gains and only short-term pains in the form of hard work.
